As you come around the corner into the white garden from the driveway, you’ll see a curvy part to the border. This is the shady spot. By Noon-ish this whole spot is covered by shade due to the way the sun goes over the cottage. I have slowly learned (through much trial & error aka dead plants) that this part of the garden needs part-shade to shade loving plants. It is also where our oil hook up is so I need to plant in a way that is accessible for them to deliver without them crushing my garden.
Currently there is a lacey hydrangea shrub that I have been slowly training into a tree form by cutting away the lower branches to raise the canopy of the plant, an azalea, some garlic chives and some misc daffodils and tulips poking through. This year is my chance to get things right and bring some existing shade loving plants I currently have over to this section and create a cozy little cozy filled with beautiful blooms.
As with the dry border, I started to move existing plants I already had that were starting to come up. I dug up a bellflower plant that need to be divided and one plant became four. Hurray! I then brought over the two bleeding heart plants that were in the entry borders because they would be getting too much sun there. I also was able to divide up the garlic chive plant into three new ones. By transplanting & dividing, my shopping list for this section just got way smaller.
